Embryo Implantation

IVF & Embryo Transfer

During IVF, eggs are fertilized outside the womb in laboratory Petri dishes under a controlled environment. When the eggs divide and develop into embryos, they are monitored till a specific time. Afterward, the healthiest embryos are selected to be transferred back to the uterus to achieve pregnancy.

Embryo transfer is the procedure in which an embryo is implanted into the uterus for further development. It is performed as a part of IVF and it is the last stage of an IVF cycle. Moreover, for the purpose of a successful transfer, the appropriate ET catheter is essential.

Types of Embryo Transfer

There are various types of IVF treatment in Pakistan. Sometimes, there are different techniques involved that differ from one IVF center to another IVF center. As per the type of IVF treatment in Pakistan, following several types of embryo transfer, such:

  • Fresh Embryo Transfer: When the eggs are fertilized, they are cultured for three to four days. Afterward, the healthiest embryo is implanted in the uterus.
  • Frozen Embryo Transfer: The healthy embryo that was not used in the first cycle and was stored for later use/attempt can be thawed and transferred to the uterus to achieve pregnancy. This is known as frozen embryo transfer.

Number of Embryos to be Transferred

The number of embryos to be transferred varies with the circumstances of each case. It depends upon the age, medical condition, receptivity of the female partner’s endometrium, and choice of the couple. However, a maximum of four embryos can be implanted in the uterus at one time. The higher the number of embryos, the higher the chances of multiple gestations which can be dangerous for both, the mother and babies.

The procedure of Embryo Transfer

Prior to embryo implantation, eggs and sperm are retrieved and combined in laboratory Petri dishes for fertilization. Once the eggs fertilize and divide and develop into embryos, they are evaluated by an embryologist. The embryologist selects the best embryo to be transferred to the uterus for pregnancy. The procedure of embryo implantation is painless and simple. Discomfort may arise but other than that there are no issues.
